PROTECT IP / SOPA Explained

PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks the Internet Vimeo video from Fight for the Future, a non-profit working to defend online freedom. Watch this short video to learn about the motivations behind the Senate version of the House’s Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). In the Sentate, the bill is called PIPA (Protect IP Act).

The internet as we know it now is free and unregulated, however, with the introduction of such Acts, the internet’s content and use would be dictated by the entertainment industry. While I support anti-piracy, I don’t support corporations hindering free speech and innovation. I think there’s a line to be drawn but this isn’t it. Is it possible that we’ve reached an age where copyright protection has to change? Would there be more innovation and improvement on products and services if anyone could tweak them? Is that true capitalism?

Some interesting things to consider.

If one can take your product and improve it get the business, should they?

If someone can take your art and make something else with it that’s even better or just different, should that be allowed?

If I take a photo from somewhere and change it and put it on my blog, should you (copyright holder/government agency) be able to take everything I own to prove a point?

Just a few of the questions that I ask about copyright laws and protection and whether in this digital age our perceptions should change.
